Melbourne band The Badloves have released another good single following on from Soulbrothertruckin’song (2019) and Tribal (2020) and I’m hoping that an album is on the way.

Although at the snail pace of one track a year we could be waiting for some time for it.

Midnight Sun was inspired by the little mermaid that sits on the rock in Copenhagen which Michael Spiby saw when he was visiting Scandinavia.

Spiby claims that she called out to him once … “It was low tide and she welcomed me back to a place I had no prior knowledge of, and with a wink of an eye, made me aware of my seafaring heritage.

“Fuelled by this full-blown revelation I returned to Australia, to launch The Badloves and reflect on such events.”

It’s a good story and the Badloves have finally got around to turning the tale into song.

The Badloves have been around since the early 1990s, but their recorded output is rather sparse.

They are best known for their debut album, Get On Board, which spent 69 weeks on the charts and won three ARIA Awards.

This album contained the singles Lost, Green limousine and Memphis and it is quite rightly considered an Australian classic.

After breaking up and reforming a couple of times and an outstanding Michael Spiby solo album in Ho’s Kitchen, The Badloves reformed in 2019 and they’ve released one single a year ever since.

Midnight Sun follows the tried and tested Badloves formula which is a brilliant blend of Aussie pub rock, Memphis R&B and soul.

It’s worked well for them so far so, why swap a winning horse?

They are heading off on a tour of the east coast and Adelaide beginning late November.

The Badloves are a good live band so keep an eye out for them.
