Schools to pass more weekend vaccine tests

Another Super Schools Vaccination Weekend is to be held this week as the State’s school vaccination clinics open up to bring COVID vaccines closer to the people.

Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk said the clinics would target areas where vaccination rates needed to improve.

“Our last pop-up school vaccination clinics were a runaway success with 116 State schools stepping up to the plate,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“More than 16,000 were vaccinated at our last Super Schools Weekend and I want to see even more people take advantage of having a vaccination centre even closer to where they live,” she said.

The next Schools Vaccination Weekend is due for the coming weekend 20 and 21 November.

Minister for Health, Yvette D’Ath said most school vaccination clinics would pop up in areas with low vaccination rates.

“Please, come forward and get vaccinated before the borders open,” Ms D’Ath said.

“We know that when the borders open, everyone will be exposed to the virus, but if you get vaccinated, you protect yourself and your community,” she said.

Minister for Education, Grace Grace reinforced the message, saying that the Vaccination Weekend also gave schools the chance for some end-of-year fundraising.

“Schools can take advantage of this and offer sausage sizzles to those getting their vaccine — getting a snag and a jab has been popular at Bunnings and I’m sure it would be at schools too,” Ms Grace said.

“There’s no need to make an appointment for our pop-up school clinics,” she said.

“Anyone aged 12 or over can just show up and get their first or second dose,” Ms Grace said.
