Women with leadership goals in the sports industry are to be supported with the launch of a new study program for current and aspiring board members from the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation.

Announced by Minister for Community Sport, Ros Spence, the study program is part of the Office’s Change Our Game Women in Governance Program and follows a successful pilot last year that saw 25 women graduate, many of whom subsequently took up leadership and executive positions within the sector.

“The Program helps women working and volunteering in the sport and recreation sector, who are new or aspiring directors, gain the knowledge, skills and ability to excel in board positions at a regional, State and national level,” Ms Spence said.

“The Office for Women in Sport and Recreation has partnered with the Australian Institute of Company Directors to deliver the three-day program, which provides a comprehensive overview of the main components of directorship including governance, strategy, risk and finance.”

She said two streams were available in the study program, one for women who currently sit on a board and another for aspiring future board members.

Ms Spence said 25 spots would be available in each stream.

“This initiative is crucial to empowering women and boosting representation in leadership positions across sport and active recreation organisations,” she said.

Head of the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation, Sarah Styles said the Program would support women to thrive in their governance roles, “whether they are early in their director journey or seeking that first opportunity”.
