The National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) kicked off the start of Indigenous Business Month this month with the release of the Indigenous Procurement Policy (IPP) outcomes for the 2020-21 financial year.
Minister for Indigenous Australians, Ken Wyatt said 10,920 Commonwealth contracts with a total value of $1.09 billion were awarded to 943 Indigenous businesses last financial year.
“The IPP continues to have incredible results year on year and Indigenous Business Month is the perfect time for everyone to look at their supply chains and see where they can invest in Indigenous businesses,” Mr Wyatt said.
“Government has committed to bringing its number and value of contracts going to Indigenous-owned and operated companies up to three per cent, making sure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are an integral part of the Commonwealth’s supply chain,” he said.
“This Policy, introduced in 2015, has created exponential growth and helped expand and create many new Indigenous businesses.”
Mr Wyatt said 2020-21 was the first year that more than 10,000 contracts were awarded under the IPP.
The Minister said that since the IPP was introduced in July 2015, 2,603 Indigenous businesses in total had secured 35,763 contracts worth $5.3 billion.
