Victoria Police held an online memorial service earlier this week to pay tribute to fallen officers on National Police Remembrance Day (29 September).
In a statement, Victoria Police said on Remembrance Day, officers honoured the sacrifice of colleagues who had died in the line of duty.
“The names of four police identified through historical research as having died while serving the community will be added to the Victoria Police Memorial Wall during this year’s service,” Victoria Police said.
“Since its establishment in 1853, Victoria Police has lost 174 police officers who have been killed while serving the community,” it said.
“The online service will also honour the lives of six police officers and three Victorian Public Servants who have passed away since last National Police Remembrance Day.”
Victoria Police said the Remembrance Day service took place online for the second time in as many years to allow police and the broader community to come together and remember fallen officers, in line with COVID-19 restrictions.
Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police, Shane Patton said it was a solemn day for police and their families “as we remember those who have paid the ultimate price while protecting the community”.
“While we are disappointed we cannot unite in person to mark the occasion, we remain united today as we honour the sacrifice of the dedicated men and women who have lost their lives while seeking to keep us all safe,” Chief Commissioner Patton said.
