The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) has launched a scholarship program to encourage Australian athletes to balance education and career pathways with their sporting ambitions.

Chief Executive Officer of the AIS, Peter Conde said the Education Scholarships Program began as a pilot in 2020 that supported 40 athletes with education scholarships.

Mr Conde said expanding the Program was part of the AIS’s work to build its Elite Athlete Education Network (EAEN) and provide athletes with more options to balance their sporting careers with education.

“The AIS Education Scholarships will be open to categorised athletes who are studying at any of the EAEN-aligned tertiary institutions around Australia,” Mr Conde said.

“Our Elite Athlete Education Network now comprises more than 40 universities and 11 TAFEs around the country, giving athletes greater choice and flexibility with their education support,” he said.

“Our priority is to support those athletes who demonstrate a genuine commitment to study and can use their own experiences to inspire and benefit others, in sport and the broader community.”

Mr Conde said grants of up to $5,000 were available through the Education Scholarships Program to individual athletes undertaking study this financial year.

Applications for round one of the program can be found at this PS News link with entries closing on Friday 15 October.

Mr Conde said Round Two will be March 2022.

He said the Program was supported by the John and Myriam Wylie Foundation.
