A new memorial area honouring Western Australia Police Force officers and staff who have lost their lives while in service has been dedicated in the chapel gardens of the Joondalup Police Academy.
Commissioner of Police, Chris Dawson said the current Wall of Remembrance displayed the names of Police Force officers killed in the line of duty.
Commissioner Dawson said the new memorial area ensured those who had died, not necessarily in the line of duty, but in other circumstances while working for the Agency, were also recognised.
At the dedication ceremony (16 September), 36 plaques containing the names of Superintendents, Inspectors, Sergeants, Detectives, Constables and a police staff member were added.
Minister for Police, Paul Papalia said it had been decided that the new memorial area should commemorate both police officers and police staff who had died while being serving employees of the Police Force.
“Not only will it give recognition of their service, but it will provide an area for their family and friends to share in the memory of their loved ones,” Mr Papalia said.
“We thank all our police officers and staff for their commitment to the community of Western Australia.”
Mr Papalia said he hoped the memorial area would provide some peace and solace for anyone from the police family who needed time to heal, reminisce, or just sit and reflect.
