INDIA: Changing India ‘needs better training’

India’s Minister of State for Personnel has called for a major update of the Public Service training curriculum to suit India’s changing scenario, which includes better liaison between civilian and military authorities.

Jitendra Singh (pictured) said the modification was crucial “to re-orient present and future administrators to the roadmap laid out by the Government for the next 25 years”.

Addressing trainees at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, the Minister called for joint programs by institutes devoted to capacity-building for good governance instead of working in silos.

He suggested widening the range of the visiting faculty at the academy and making guest faculty more inclusive of scientific experts, industrial entrepreneurs, owners of successful start-ups and women achievers.

“The curriculum at Lal Bahadur Shastri must suit India’s changing scenario and, therefore, needs to be accordingly modified constantly and from time-to-time,” Mr Singh said.

“My Department of Personnel and Training has taken a big step towards this by instituting Mission Karmayogi (a capacity-building scheme for Public Servants),” he said.

“I complement the officers who have attended the program, leading to a better and shared understanding, coordination and collaboration with other Departments and the armed forces.”

Mr Singh said that as India entered 75 years of its independence, it was already planning for the next 25 years.

“We are preparing the civil and the military authorities to jointly work in different conflict situations internally as well externally,” the Minister said.
