ACT Policing has called on the Canberra community to keep following the lockdown rules as the city and its suburbs enter another week of the lockdown.

Detective Superintendent at ACT Policing, Naomi Binstead said that to date there had been an excellent level of compliance across the whole community with people doing a great job in limiting travel and contact with others.

“Overall, police continue to be pleased with the level of compliance and we’re asking the community to keep it up,” Detective Supt Binstead said.

She said that in the past week police conducted more than 3,200 traffic stops across the ACT to ensure the trips being made were permitted under the current lockdown arrangements.

Supt Binstead said officers had also conducted more than 800 checks of people and businesses, issuing 14 infringements and 22 cautions for breaches of health directions.

“We saw some restrictions relaxed last week and people have generally met those new rules,” she said.

“We’re keen to make sure people keep up the mask wearing and only gather in outdoor groups of up to five in line with the directions.

“We remind everyone that unless you are travelling for essential purposes, you should not be on the road.

Supt Binstead said Road Policing officers would continue the anywhere, anytime approach for compliance activities.

“ACT Policing will continue to deploy its dedicated COVID-19 Taskforce each day to ensure we’re all doing what we can to stop the spread,” she said.

For police assistance, residents should phone 131 444 and only contact Triple Zero (000) for emergencies.

Reports of non-compliance can be made on the COVID-19 Helpline by phoning 6207 7244, 8am-8pm, seven days a week, or online through the Access Canberra website at this PS News link.
