The Public Sector Commission has identified two young finalists in the 2021 WA Training Awards saying they received their starts through public sector traineeships.

In a statement, the Commission said Samantha Winter (pictured left) and Amber Ugle-Hayward (right) were finalists in different categories of the Awards which recognise the best people undertaking vocational education and training programs.

“Wanting to pursue a career that was meaningful, challenging and had a positive impact on the lives of Western Australians, Amber applied for the Aboriginal Traineeship Program in 2020,” the Commission said.

“She used her time at her host Agency, the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage, to build her skills and knowledge and expand her networks.”

It said that at the end of the traineeship, Ms Ugle-Hayward was recognised for her leadership, collaboration, respect and integrity and was now a finalist in the WA Trainee of the Year category.

“In Year 10 and unsure of what career to pursue, Samantha heard about the Certificate II in Government through the School-based Traineeship Program,” it said.

“Seeing it as a great opportunity, she started her traineeship at the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, while continuing Year 12 at Bullsbrook College three days a week.”

Ms Winter said the traineeship gave her a head start in the workforce, broadened her knowledge, helped make connections and built her independence and confidence.

She is a WA School-based Apprentice of the Year finalist.
