Scientists employed by the Queensland Public Service came out from behind their Bunsen burners last week to celebrate National Science Week (14-22 August).

Senior Scientist for the Department of Environment and Science (DES), Kenneth Wong has specialities in mathematical modelling, numerical analysis and discrete mathematics and has worked with the DES for 12 years.

Currently part of the Department’s climate modelling and analysis team, Dr Wong said the team produced localised climate projections for Queensland’s regions using cutting-edge global and regional climate models and statistical analysis.

“My background in mathematical modelling and numerical analysis certainly helped me understand the inner workings of climate models,” Dr Wong said.

“Having the research skills from my PhD also helps me critically analyse the latest climate science literature and co-author scientific publications.”

He said he was able to use his skills in mathematics and statistics to develop innovative methods and algorithms to analyse data and derive useful and relevant information on the future climate and its associated risks to the environment.

“The climate projections data and information our team produce will be used in decision-making tools for agriculture, water resource management, built infrastructure, emergency services and health services,” Dr Wong said.

Minister for Science, Meaghan Scanlon said it was science and health experts like Chief Health Officer of Queensland, Jeanette Young who had helped drive the State’s pandemic health response, in turn allowing the Government to deliver a COVID-19 economic recovery plan.

“New survey results show that 19 in 20 Australians back more investment in science,” Ms Scanlon said.
