The Transport Canberra and City Service Directorate is marking Rail Safety Week this week (9-15 August) by reminding Canberrans to pay attention to their surroundings on the light rail corridor.
Minister for Transport and City Services, Chris Steel said the annual community awareness week reminded people to look out for their own safety and that of others around light rail.
“This week is an opportunity for us all to remember that safety around light rail is everyone’s responsibility and we can all do our bit to reduce the risk of someone getting hurt,” Mr Steel said.
“You can reduce your risk by simply paying attention to your surroundings,” he said.
“This means staying behind the yellow line at the light rail stop, stopping to look both ways before you cross and paying attention around the tracks and stops.”
Mr Steel said the Directorate had launched an online campaign to coincide with the Week featuring the latest instalments of near-miss footage from Canberra’s light rail system.
The Minister said the campaign provided a strong reminder that the rail safety messages remained relevant all year round.
“A member of the public is killed or injured on the Australian rail network every 2.5 days,” he said.
“While we have been fortunate in the ACT with only a couple of incidents, they can happen easily.”
Mr Steel unveiled the latest light rail safety wrap on Monday (9 August), Don’t rush or be crushed, designed by graphic design student at Gungahlin College, Ada Miller through Canberra Metro’s recent rail safety poster competition.
