A new review commissioned by the Department of Education and Training (DET) is to identify how TAFEs can meet the changing needs of the local agricultural industry and provide opportunities to Victorians.

Minister for Training and Skills, Gayle Tierney said The Future of Agriculture Training in Victoria Review would ensure local TAFE training continued to attract and prepare students for the demands of the evolving industry.

Ms Tierney said the Review aimed to ensure agricultural training was innovative and relevant; understand the factors involved in student choice; ensure TAFE and Learn Locals could continue to be at the centre of agricultural training; and explore how TAFE training could meet the needs of employers and students.

“It will involve extensive consultation with industry, employers, TAFE and other training providers and students to develop a series of key recommendations to ensure the sector has the training needed to grow the agricultural industry,” Ms Tierney said.

DET said the Review consultations would commence in August and include stakeholder engagement with agricultural sector employers, training providers and students.

It said consultations would help inform the future actions required to strengthen training and increase enrolments in agricultural courses.

The Department said the Review’s report, including a series of key recommendations, was expected in December.
