The Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has launched an online survey to gather the views of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women around the nation to guide its recommendations to the Government on how to support them better.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner at the AHRC, June Oscar said the survey would reveal the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls’ needs, priorities, challenges and aspirations.
She said it would support the Wiyi Yani U Thangani (Women’s Voices) national consultation process, and encouraged all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to be involved.
Ms Oscar said the survey was aimed at women 18 years and over, including women who were trans, gender diverse and intersex.
She said she had been travelling around Australia, listening to the stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls.
“For those that are unable to attend in face-to-face consultations, the survey provides an opportunity to participate in this process, and ensure a diverse range of views and experiences inform the final report to Government,” Ms Oscar said.
“For Indigenous women and girls wishing to provide more information, a submissions process is also available that allows Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls to share their story in their own words.”
She said consultations would run until November with a final report expected by mid-2019.
