The Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources has revealed that the National Measurement Institute (NMI) is to celebrate World Metrology Day next Thursday (20 May) with a live webinar.

In a statement, the Department said World Metrology Day marked the anniversary of the 1875 signing of the Metre Convention (symbolised in the picture), one of the world’s longest-standing treaties.

“Our confidence in goods and services is due to nations around the world agreeing on a common set of standards and language for measurement,” the Department said.

“This year’s World Metrology Day theme is Measurement for Health. It aims to raise awareness of the important role measurement plays in our health and wellbeing.”

The Department said the webinar would feature presentations by NMI experts on how measurement could support healthcare to provide optimal health outcomes.

“Topics covered include innovations in response to COVID-19; calibration of medical devices; analysis of medicinal cannabis; DNA reference materials and measurement of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the health of bees,” it said.

There would be a representative from Water Research Australia talking about the ColoSSoS Project, a collaboration with NMI on sewage surveillance of SARS-CoV-2.

“We’ll end with an interactive panel discussion where participants can present their views and ask questions,” the Department said.
