The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet has reflected on the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women’s (CSW) 65th Session last month, in which Australia played a key role.
The Department said the CSW was the principal global forum for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
“The priority theme of CSW65 was women’s full and effective participation and decision-making in public life, as well as the elimination of violence, for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls,” the Department said.
“Australia’s National Statement addressed this theme, highlighting the commitment to advancing women’s leadership at all levels and in all sectors and spaces,” it said.
“The National Statement also stressed the importance of all women and girls living free from discrimination and violence.”
Australia’s Ambassador for Gender Equality, Julie-Ann Guivarra served as Vice-Chair of the CSW Bureau during the Session which ran from 15 to 26 March and moderated a Ministerial round table on good practices towards achieving women’s full and effective participation, and decision-making, in public life.
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Women, Senator Marise Payne said women’s presence, contributions and courage were critical to a strong, inclusive and sustainable recovery from the health and economic crisis of COVID-19.
