Just in time for the school holiday season comes the second instalment of ‘The Incredibles’, the animated movie directed again by Brad Bird but quite surprisingly released some 14 years after the highly successful Oscar-winning original in 2004.
This time around the non-stop action family comedy is more focused on Elastigirl/Helen (voiced again by Holly Hunter) saving the world while her husband Mr Incredible/Bob (Craig Nelson) is left to look after their three children: Violet (Sarah Vowell), Dash (Huck Millner-his first feature film) and baby Jack-Jack (Eli Fucile) – all of whom are part of the Incredibles team and superheroes but considered illegal by the authorities.
This is about to change if Winston Deavor (Bob Odenkirk –‘The Post’), Head of DevTech -assisted by his sister Evelyn (Catherine Keener –‘Get Out’) – gets his way in removing the illegal status of all superheroes by using Elastigirl to improve their public image.
To achieve this, Elastigirl is given a special custom-made motorcycle to chase down criminals including an out-of-control bullet train, thereby enhancing her superhero profile as a do-gooder, whereas Bob has to contend with domestic challenges, especially Jack-Jack’s newfound powers.
When the time comes for Winston to make his final pitch in having the illegal status changed after assembling all the superheroes world-wide on his luxury boat, he finds himself betrayed by someone closest to him called the Screenslaver.
It then takes not only the super efforts of Elastigirl, the rest of the Incredibles family and close family friend Frozone/Lucius (Samuel Jackson) to save the day but those of some other superheroes as well.
This sequel may be a long-time coming but the wait was worth it considering it once again is able to blend such charming characters as Elastigirl, Mr. Incredible and Frozone into an entertaining action-packed storyline, not to mention Jack-Jack’s antics.
There is no doubt both young and old will thoroughly enjoy ‘Incredibles 2’ and let’s hope the next instalment will not take as long to release.
