New sporting facilities to help Canberrans stay active, healthy, and engaged are on the way following the announcement of funding to deliver the Government’s 2020 election promises.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr said $1.25 million had been allocated over the next two years to plan and design new sporting facilities.

“Funding of $400,000 will be invested in the detailed planning and design works for a new permanent home for dragon boating at Grevillea Park on Lake Burley Griffin,” Mr Barr said.

“The facility would include a new boathouse, storage facility, and a spectator area to support events,” he said.

“The facility will support growth opportunities for Dragon Boat ACT, which boasts more than 600 members across seven teams and three school teams.”

Mr Barr said the 2020-2021 Budget also included $500,000 to progress the initial design and planning work for a new tennis centre in Amaroo.

The Minister said the centre would include 12 full-sized courts, LED floodlighting; up to two hotshots’ courts; a pavilion; a hitting wall; and parking.

“Funding of $350,000 is also being committed to begin designing improvements for the Phillip District Enclosed Oval, including a new pavilion, upgraded grandstand and lights and additional parking,” Mr Barr said.
