ACT Policing’s longest-serving member, Constable Kenny Koala, is to return to active duty after being sidelined for the past 11 months due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Constable Kenny Koala’s handler, David Packwood said Constable Kenny would return to child-care centres and schools across the ACT this week to resume his mission of educating children on safety issues and building a good relationship between young people and the police.
“It’s been too long for both Kenny and I since we’ve been in the schools, and we’re both looking forward to sharing important messages about road safety, protective behaviour, decision making and online safety,” Mr Packwood said.
“Our new kindergarten to Year Two Stay OK Online component was only delivered to a few schools last year so it will be good to share those important messages with many more students,” he said.
ACT Policing said the Constable Kenny Koala program was designed for children aged three to 12 years old and taught road safety, protective behaviours, online safety, decision making and consequences, and aimed to encourage children to turn to police for help and advice.
Police said the Constable Kenny program had been operating for more than 40 years, with Kenny visiting more than 1,200 classrooms a year and teaching more than 25,000 children.
