Amelia has unseated Charlotte as the most popular girls’ baby name for 2020, while Oliver claimed prime position for the boys for the seventh straight year according to the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM).
Attorney General Mark Speakman and Minister for Customer Service, Victor Dominello revealed the BDM’s lists of top 10 baby names in 2020.
Mr Speakman said Oliver was still the leading name for boys, followed by Noah and William.
“The trio’s top-three status has remained unchanged for the past five years,” Mr Speakman said.
“Amelia took out the girls’ top spot ahead of Olivia, while the always strong-performer Charlotte was bumped down to third place after being most favoured for the past three years running,” he said.
Mr Dominello said choosing a baby name was a special moment which brought joy to families in what was a challenging year.
“Whether you opt for a classic favourite or forge a new path with a trend-setter, naming a baby is one of the most important decisions new parents make,” Mr Dominello said.
“The fastest mover in the top 10 for boys over the past decade was Leo – jumping 61 spots up the rankings to reach fourth place in 2020,” he said.
“Isla has also shot up the charts over the past 10 years, climbing 18 spots in the girls’ list to place fourth.”
Mr Dominello said Zoe broke into the top 10 names for girls, where Ava, Chloe, Grace and Sophia remained unchanged.
The Minister said the names Lucas, Liam and Henry also gained popularity in the boys’ list while Mia, Jack, Thomas and James stayed in the top 10 lists but moved down the ranks.
He said the final lists of the top 100 baby names would be published on the BDM website in April.
For the record ‘Mark’ was the most popular name for boys twice – in 1964 and 1977 -but ‘Victor’ has yet to trouble the registrars!
