Monash immortalised at Memorial
A commemorative sculpture of General Sir John Monash has been unveiled at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, 100 years after he planned and directed forces in the World War I Battle of Hamel.
The sculpture depicts Lieutenant General Monash wearing his civilian suit, medals, and Returned and Services League badge.
LT GEN Monash meticulously planned the action at Hamel to the last detail, estimating all objectives would be taken in 90 minutes – it took 93.
In the aftermath of the war, Sir John was appointed Director-General of Repatriation and Demobilisation, efficiently repatriating 160,000 Australian soldiers in eight months.
NBN steps up connections
The National Broadband Network (NBN) is now connected to four million customers.
Minister for Communications, Senator Mitch Fifield said the NBN rollout was making strong progress with more than 6.8 million premises now able to order a service across Australia.
“This milestone reflects the speed of the rollout,” Senator Fifield said.
“More than 100,000 homes and businesses are being connected each month and we are well on our way to completing the network build in the next two years,” he said.
At present, around 94 per cent of all homes and businesses outside major urban areas either have access to NBN-based services or have new network construction under way.
