Libraries ACT has launched a new chapter in its “wuthering” winter program, celebrating the 200th birthday of Emily Bronte, NAIDOC Week and the Canberra Writers Festival in July.

Director of Libraries ACT, Vanessa Little said that following the Superman-charged June, this month’s activities and events would be encouraging Canberrans to layer up and leave the house.

“There is never a dull month at Libraries ACT and we’re demonstrating that with another month of programs and events for all ages and interests this July,” Ms Little said.

She said July is the birthday month of classic novelist Emily Bronte (pictured).

“Her novel Wuthering Heights has divided opinion in its many years of publication,” Ms Little said.

“However, its enduring themes keep it relevant.”

She said people could join a panel discussion, Wuthering Heights … Love or Not?, on 30 July at Woden Library.

“Monday, 30 July may be Emily Bronte’s actual birthday, but we’re celebrating her 200th year early on 14 July with a performance of Kate Bush’s classic dance in Civic Square,” Ms Little said.

“I invite the community to dress in red and come down on Saturday morning to be involved in the interpretive dance celebration.”

She said NAIDOC Week was being celebrated from 8 July to 15 July with this year’s theme “Because of Her, We Can!”

Ms Little said Libraries ACT was getting involved with an exhibition to be held at Woden Library throughout July.

“Libraries ACT is teaming up with the ACT Writers’ Centre to give our community an opportunity to see a few events ahead of the Canberra Writers Festival in August,” she said.

“Panel topics to whet your appetite ahead of the festival are connected to its theme of ‘Power, Politics, Passion’ and include ‘Changing the World Through Words’, ‘Bloggers of Influence’, and ‘Gaming with Purpose’.”

All Libraries ACT programs and events are free, however, bookings are essential as places are limited.
