The praises of Tim Adams’s Riesling

By John Rozentals.

Tim Adams: a riesling tragic.

Clare Valley winemaker Tim Adams loves riesling.

In fact, you could describe him a riesling tragic, and you could say he’s ended up in the right place.

After all, Australia makes excellent riesling and the Clare Valley is recognised as one of the variety’s spiritual homes here.

But don’t let me be your only judge. British wine expert Oz Clarke had this to say about Tim’s riesling in his highly regarded book New Classic Wines:

“The riesling has a wonderful aromatic flavour of ripe Cox’s apples and apple blossom all mixed up. The acidity is like a darting streak of lime, and a little maturity brings a lovely biscuit and honey richness. Yet the wine is totally dry.”

WINE REVIEWS

Birds of a Feather Lime and Pineapple Sour ($8.50 per 440ml). OK, this is wheat beer, good wheat beer, brightly packaged, very brightly packaged, as a crisply sour drink. It’s my favourite of a trio of beer sours that is refreshing and crisp.

Mr Mick 2020 Rosé ($17): Made from a blend of grenache, sangiovese and tempranillo, this dry rosé is delightfully flavoured and ideally suited to have with lunch on the verandah in most Australian climates.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Mr Mick 2020 Riesling ($17): Unlike most of Tim Adams’s rieslings, this dryish white carries a touch of sweetness. The acid is beautifully balanced by fruit flavours and it is ideal with freshly grilled fish served with salad.
