Energex heats up warning on Christmas lighting

Energex has advised people stringing up sparkly strands of Christmas lights in the coming weeks to make sure they’re electrically safe.

Energex’s Manger of Business Improvements, Graham Burke said electrical dangers ranged from electric shocks to house fires.

“However, they can be easily avoided by following a few safety procedures when installing powered Christmas decorations,” Mr Burke said.

“Ultimately Christmas lights and powered decorations are electrical appliances and, like any appliance, if used incorrectly or faulty, can be dangerous.”

He said most people threw away faulty home appliances or had them repaired by a qualified technician — damaged Christmas lights and decorations were no different.

“Before plugging them in check for signs of obvious damage such as frayed cords and exposed wires. If you’re satisfied they’re in good condition then plug them in and stay with them for five or more minutes to check for concealed or less obvious faults,” Mr Burke said.

He said people putting up powered decorations on the outside of their properties should make sure they were manufactured to withstand the elements.

“Quality decorations should always specify if they’re built for indoor or outdoor use. Using outdoor lights inside the home is perfectly fine but never use lights built for indoor use outside because they are not water resistant and can deteriorate quickly becoming a safety hazard,” Mr Burke said.

“Christmas is about spending quality time with loved ones and there’s no better way to do so than by ensuring you take a few electrical safety precautions beforehand.”
