Police launch new road safety campaign

ACT Policing has launched a new road safety campaign this month asking ‘Who are you rushing to meet?’.

According to the police, many speeding Canberra motorists have already met police officers as a result of their driving.

The police said that earlier this month on Facebook they explained that speeding offences for 2020 had already exceeded the full numbers in 2019.

They said that generated feedback from community members who expressed their concerns about speeding, especially early in the mornings.

The police said that in response to the feedback, their road police conducted a targeted speeding operation, and across two early-morning, detected a dozen motorists exceeding the speed limits on major roads.

ACT Policing Superintendent, Road Policing and Planning, Corey Heldon said the infringements detected on those days revealed that speeding motorists could be found at any time and on any street.

“While some people might think it’s OK to exceed the speed limit early in the morning when there’s less traffic on the road, and that they’ll get away with it, they’re wrong,” Superintendent Heldon said.

“The time of day makes no difference. If police see you speeding then you can expect to be stopped by them.”

He said speed limits were there for a reason.

“They are the maximum speed you’re allowed to drive at. The faster you drive, the more likely something is to go wrong, and the worse the outcome will be when that happens.”

He said that anyone who wished to report areas where they believed speeding drivers were a regular problem should do so by contacting Crime Stoppers ACT where information could be provided anonymously.
