The National Museum of Australia (NMA) in Canberra has launched a new online education initiative and website for teachers and students to explore some of Australia’s defining moments.
The NMA said the website, Australia’s Defining Moments Digital Classroom, included an extensive range of interactive games, quizzes, videos, images and a variety of other learning resources.
Program Manager at the NMA, David Arnold said the new website was aligned to the Australian curriculum and a timely initiative in a year that had highlighted the value of online learning.
“We spent six to 12 months laying the foundation work before the creation of any digital content,” Mr Arnold said.
“We forged relationships with teachers and students,” he said.
“They played a critical role in scoping, writing, testing and refining content.”
Mr Arnold said the website was a great example of what could be achieved through collaboration.
“We were lucky enough to include contributions of more than 1,000 images, 100 videos and 120 stories,” he said.
“The Australian National University and the National Film and Sound Archive contributed some of these items.”
He said the NMA wanted a creative and engaging homepage that encouraged kids to explore Australia’s history.
Mr Arnold said the timeline on the homepage would help teachers and students easily navigate the site and users could filter information by curriculum, defining moments and learning resources.
