The ACT Electoral Commissioner has thanked all election staff and supporting Agencies for their significant contribution during the ACT Legislative Assembly voting period.

Electoral Commissioner Damian Cantwell said staff and Agencies had contributed to the smooth delivery of democracy to ACT residents.

“Voters were able to attend our polling premises throughout the three-week voting period and experience a quick, smooth and COVID safe voting experience, and that is a testament to the commitment and professionalism of our staff and enabling organisations,” Mr Cantwell said.

“All staff are to be commended for their efforts but particularly the early voting teams for delivering democracy to ACT residents throughout a long voting period that included extended hours on Fridays, weekends, a public holiday and continuous delivery of friendly and helpful service,” he said.

Mr Cantwell said the spread of voter turnout over the full three-week period was exactly what the Commission had planned as part of COVID safety arrangements for the election.

“Elections ACT cannot officially declare the results of the 2020 ACT Legislative Assembly election until all votes have been received, final quotas have been determined and full distributions of preferences have been undertaken,” he said.

“The deadline for postal votes to be received by Elections ACT is 5pm Friday 23 October 2020, as such, any final count of remaining ballot papers cannot be undertaken until after this point,” Mr Cantwell said.
