Canberra officially marked the 27th anniversary of its relationship with its Japanese Sister City ‘Nara’ last week with a ceremony at the Japanese Embassy.
Events ACT said the ceremony was hosted by the Ambassador for Japan, His Excellency Reiichiro Takahashi.
“With more than 1,000 candles illuminating the Embassy Grounds, the ceremony paid tribute to the origin of the Canberra Nara Candle Festival, and officially recognised the strong bonds between the two cities,” Events ACT said.
“While the traditional candle display that usually lights up Lennox Gardens won’t go ahead this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, there are many new opportunities for the community to be involved in the celebrations,” it said.
“Including a picnic in Canberra Nara Peace Park and dining out by candlelight on delicious food at Itadakimasu – the Canberra Nara Foodie Weekend from 22-25 October.”
Events ACT said over 20 restaurants were participating in the foodie weekend, offering a range of experiences from fine dining degustation to sashimi takeaway, warming miso or green tea ice cream.
“The community can still enjoy the peaceful surrounds of the Canberra Nara Peace Park, which was a gift to the people of Canberra from the people of Nara,” it said.
“While in the Park members of the community will have an opportunity to strike the Rotary Peace Bell from 11am to 3pm on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October.”
Events ACT said a range of opportunities were on offer this weekend to embrace Japanese culture through arts, food, local businesses and community groups.
