Transport for NSW is reminding motorbike riders to make smart choices when it comes to choosing a helmet, following the release of the latest helmet safety ratings.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Paul Toole said protective safety gear could mean the difference between life and death for motorcyclists if they were involved in an accident.
“The Consumer Rating and Assessment of Safety Helmets (CRASH) – a consortium of Transport for NSW, Insurance Australia Group and Transport Accident Commission – carries out tests every year against a range of criteria including protection and comfort,” Mr Toole said.
“So far this year, there have been 37 motorcyclists killed on NSW roads,” he said.
He said that despite motorcycles only accounting for four per cent of vehicles on the road, motorcyclists made up 19 per cent of all road fatalities last year, with 68 deaths.
Minister for Transport and Roads, Andrew Constance said the latest CRASH ratings would help riders choose the right helmet to reduce the severity of head injuries and the likelihood of death or permanent injury if involved in an accident.
