ACT Labor has committed itself to expanding the Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC), increasing active travel, supporting the creative industry, and promoting reconciliation with first nations peoples if re-elected in this month’s ACT Legislative Assembly election.

Leader of ACT Labor, Andrew Barr said a re-elected Labor Government would create hundreds of new local jobs by allocating $21 million to build a new 10,000 square metre indoor venue at EPIC.

“The venue will be the first, purpose-built facility in Canberra that can cater for large multicultural performances and private events such as weddings,” Mr Barr said.

“The new facility will also be available for regular EPIC users, including trade shows, business events, the farmers market, Summernats and the folk festival,” he said.

Mr Barr said his party would build and maintain new shared paths, cycleways and upgraded footpaths across Canberra to promote active travel in the ACT.

He said ACT Labor would also work with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to promote healing and reconciliation.

“To support our commitment to Closing the Gap, a re-elected ACT Labor Government will establish a $20 million Healing and Reconciliation Fund to be administered in partnership with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to deliver on the priorities identified through the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Agreement,” Mr Barr said.

ACT Labor’s Arts spokesperson, Gordan Ramsay said the party would support Canberra’s creative sector by completing the design work and business case for a new Canberra Theatre precinct in the city to attract bigger shows and concerts to the ACT.
