Another entertaining visit to our ‘Made for the Job’ file this week in which the inspired art of ‘Aptonymy’ has been at work fossicking out staff members whose names make them the perfect fits for the jobs they do.
This week we visit NSW where the State’s National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has been actively encouraging the State’s citizens to plan ahead for the school holidays and set off on nature-based adventures at camping grounds, national parks and other outdoor attractions now that Spring has arrived.
And who better to offer suggestions, ideas, tips and recommendations for a wonderful and rewarding confrontation with nature than the NPWS’s Acting Director of its South Coast Branch, particularly when the Acting Director’s name is ‘Graham Bush’.
Right man in the right place! And another win for the world of Aptonymy.
The art of Artie
Encouraging and inspired news from Queensland’s Department of Education now with a cunningly creative and clever new program encouraging Indigenous high-school kids the chance to sit for their provisional driver’s licences as long as they stay at school and meet a few important targets
And while the benefits are attractive to the youngsters, the fact it comes wrapped in a brilliant anagram guaranteed to win their attention – Achieving Results Through Indigenous Education (or ARTIE for short) – is simply a touch of genius.
Surprisingly for anyone living south of the Murray, the word-play ARTIE has nothing to do with art but channels instead Queensland’s legendary Aboriginal Rugby League hero Artie Beetson, a giant of a player who has left a giant of encouragement for the Department to build on.
While the link between Artie and the kids is a proven winner, and seeing them finish school to everyone’s advantage, the Department deserves recognition for thinking outside the classroom.
In the event, PS-sssst! wouldn’t be surprised if there were Artie fans of all ages willing to achieve all sorts achievement in the big man’s name.
Well done!
Waving away?
To Rama Gaind’s gracious and gratis giveaway now in which two lucky readers become the new owners of either a Blu-Ray or DVD version of Peter Weir’s classic Aussie drama movie The Last Wave, starring Richard Chamberlain, Olivia Hamnett and David Gulpilil.
To win their way to winnership, all our winning winners needed do was name the actor who played the mysterious character Chris Lee in the film, the correct answer to which was Mr Gulpilil.
And the first entries to emerge from the PS News Barrel of Booty with that right answer belonged to Noel R from the Australian Digital Health Agency who picks up the Blu-ray copy of the film and John T from the Department of Social Services in Western Australia who gets to play the DVD copy.
Congratulations to Noel and John and thanks to everyone who gave it a go. The prizes will be winging their way to their new owners any day soon.
For the rest of us, Rama has another selection of freebies up her sleeves with her current DVD prize up for grabs at this PS News link and her latest DVD giveaway at this link.
Good luck to all who join in the fun.
