Police, their families and community members are pausing this week to pay tribute to fallen officers on National Police Remembrance Day, Tuesday (29 September).

In a statement, the Queensland Police Service said the commemoration was held every year to honour police officers across the country who had lost their lives, ensuring the integrity, courage and bravery of their ultimate sacrifice was never forgotten.

“In Brisbane, this day is usually marked by a march through the central business district followed by a service,” the police service said.

“Due to COVID-19 restrictions and concerns for the community’s safety, things will be a little different for our commemorative activities. Unfortunately, there will be no march or public service.”

However, QPS invited the public to join the viewing of a live streamed service on the day.

“Those wishing to participate in an online candlelight vigil are also invited to do so.

Use any candle to hold your own candlelight vigil,” the police said.

It also encouraged people to simply light a candle and consider taking a photo or short video and share it to social media, using hashtag #NPRD2020.”
