The Lane Cellars is hosting the inaugural ‘People’s Choice Wine Awards’ for Orange Region Wines in the lead-up to the 2020 Orange Wine Festival.

The awards are a new consumer-based survey designed to engage Orange Region Wine drinkers at a time when covid-19 has caused the cancellation of a number of major events during the Orange Wine Festival.

The awards cover 10 key categories, from Sparkling Wines and Sauvignon Blanc, through to Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Lane Cellars People’s Choice Wine Awards winners will be announced on October 2, at the beginning of the Orange Wine Festival.

“The wine festival is a key event in the region’s calendar, and we wanted create a bit of fun, and interest in the local wines. Usually there’s the wine show and its tasting, but this has been cancelled this year,” said The Lane Cellars co-owner, David Cumming.

“The survey has been open for a number of weeks now, and we’ve had a great response.

“There are a number of brands that are starting gain leads in each category, including Angullong, Swinging Bridge, See Saw, Brangayne and Rikard. No doubt there will be a bit of a run in the last week before the results are announced.”

The results will be announced on The Lane Cellars website (www.thelanecellars.com) and via its weekly newsletter.

The Lane Cellars is located in the Orange Arcade in Summer Street, Orange.

WINE REVIEWS

The Natural Wine Co 2020 Rosé: Regular readers of this column will know that I like rosé. I like this wine mainly because the flavours offer some substance. These flavours include fresh raspberry, cream, honey and nuts. It is soft in the mouth and a fine aperitif.

The Natural Wine Co 2020 Sauvignon Blanc: This is an aromatic dry white with prominent tropical fruit characters including passionfruit, melon, pineapple and grapefruit. The flavours are well balanced with mid-palate fruit weight combining with a fresh lively finish. It is a great match with lighter seafood dishes.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Windowrie 2020 The Mill Shiraz: This is a full-bodied dry red with exemplary plum and spice aromas. The palate is well balanced with lovely fruit intensity, complimented by the judicious use of French oak. It can be matched with char-grilled vegetables and BBQ meats.

NOTE: Potential travellers should check the status of individual events and establishments with regard to the coronavirus outbreak.
