Q: We currently have a Mercedes-Benz GL350 which I love.
But it is five years old and starting to cost us money, so we are thinking of downsizing a little.
We did test drive the new Mercedes but think it’s a little big and too expensive.
So would you recommend the Lexus RX 350 or RX 450, or the Volvo XC 90?
We’d be happy to look at something else if you think there’s a better option in the price bracket from $65,000 to $120,000
Felicia C
A: I would go for the XC 90, every time. The GL is big and quite elephantine to drive and run, and the two Lexus models are nothing special. In contrast, the XC 90 is beautifully designed and built, well equipped, safe and luxurious.
Q: I would very much appreciate your advice for a warm hatch purchase in the near future.
I’m looking at upgrading from a 2017 Mazda3 Touring sedan.
My choices are the Hyundai N-Line or Ford Focus ST.
Or should I wait for the Focus ST-Line coming in December with independent rear suspension?
Please advise which of these two you would buy with your cash.
Andrew G
A: I would go with the Hyundai and don’t worry about direct injection as that technology has been around for decades. The Fiesta ST can be a feisty little thing. But, because they are sporty and specialised, you should drive both and pick the one you prefer.
Q: I am keen to buy a Lexus NX300.
Do you have any comments or views on the vehicle?
I have owned a Lexus GS300 for the last 14 years.
Geoff C
A: What did my mother tell me . . .? I would not recommend an NX300, not even remotely. There are plenty of other SUVs, even from Kia and Hyundai which don’t have a premium badge, which are considerably better.
Q: I’m replacing a Nissan NP300 STX as a tow rig for a 22-foot Jayco van.
The cost of a LandCruiser is outside my budget so I’m thinking of the 2020 Nissan Patrol.
Michael C
A: Have you thought about a Toyota Prado? It’s a short-wheelbase LandCruiser. The Patrol is nice, and very luxurious, but suffers from heavy fuel use with its petrol V8 engine.
Q: I am retired, aged 71, and my wife has just retired.
We currently drive a 2015 Hyundai Tucson Highlander CRDi AWD with 62,000 kilometres.
We have driven around Australia with no problems except my wife finds the headrest very uncomfortable in the passenger’s seat
So we are considering updating our vehicle, intend to drive around Australia again, and are looking for comfort and luxury as current vehicle has all the bells and whistles.
We are looking at the Lexus NX300 F Sport, Audi Q5, Mercedes GLC 250 and Volvo XC60.
Do you think we should do petrol, diesel or hybrid and, if we changed to a sedan, which vehicle would you recommend.
Barrie and Judy H
A: You should test drive the latest BMW X3 and Volvo XC60 and pick between them, going petrol because there is no need for diesel. In a passenger car, great value with quality and big cabin space, take a look at the Skoda Superb wagon which would be great to tour around Australia.
Q: I currently drive a 2019 model Subaru Forester with a 1500 kg braked tow limit and 150kg tow ball limit.
However I will be towing a boat soon which will have a total tow weight of around 1200kg but perhaps a little more when loaded with gear.
My concern is whether I should consider getting an SUV that has minimum 2000 kg tow limit to give myself more buffer.
I don’t really want to do that as I like my Suby and it’s fuel efficient.
Daryl L
A: Run the rig over a weigh-bridge and, if it’s under the limit, save money and keep smiling with the car you already like.
