By Sheppard, Empire Of Song/Chugg Music 2020.
Brisbane based siblings, Sheppard, have released the latest track in their year long quest to release a new track every month of 2020 leading to the full album release later this year.
Catalina grabbed my attention for a number of reasons; firstly, as an owner of classic cars (including Jaguars) the cover shot of the highly desirable E-Type hooked me immediately and secondly this song is a new sound for the band.
Sheppard have built their success to this point by producing exquisitely crafted catchy pop songs that are drenched with radio friendly musical hooks.
Their sound was based around acoustic guitars, piano and pop synths, and tight harmonies.
It has resulted in tremendous world-wide commercial sales, and numerous award successes, that has made the band one of Australia’s best musical exports in recent years, so there may have been some reticence to tinker with the winning formula.
However a close listen to the tracks released this year reveals a gradual drift away from bubble-gum pop to a heavier sound.
On Catalina the acoustic guitars have been replaced by riffing electric guitars layered over a funky beat that morphs into a classic rock track.
Amy Sheppard once again takes the lead vocal following on from the success of the previous single, Kiss My Fat Ass.
Since February Sheppard has released Don’t Believe In Love, Somebody Like You, Come Back, Thank You, Kiss My Fat Ass, Symphony and now Catalina so they are approximately halfway through their new album tracks.
The quality of these songs suggests that the album should be a good one.
The staggered releases are a clever marketing ploy as fans who buy the singles will also purchase the album.
