Transport Canberra has released a new transport strategy, outlining its vision for a world class system that supports a compact and sustainable city.
The Agency said its ACT Transport Strategy 2020 was aimed at providing flexible, reliable and sustainable options for the people of Canberra to make their journeys.
“Canberra’s future transport system will give people greater choice over how and when they travel and contribute to our city’s status as one of the most liveable in the world,” Transport Canberra said.
“It will operate as one connected transport network, where people can move between transport modes seamlessly and access transport easily, regardless of where they live, disability or background,” it said.
“It will create a compact liveable city by supporting the delivery of new homes, jobs and services in accessible locations across the city.”
It said that at a strategic level, three main avenues would be employed to bring about the transport system of the future, including future-focused investment; refocusing on network planning and design; and getting the most out of existing transport infrastructure.
“These strategic actions will be supported by an operational ACT Transport Recovery Plan, to steer transport back towards a sustainable and healthy path, as we overcome the impacts of COVID-19 on our community,” Transport Canberra said.
Minister for Transport, Chris Steel said the Strategy was developed alongside the ACT Planning Strategy 2018 and the Climate Change Strategy 2019, and recognised the important relationship between transport and land use.
Mr Steel said the Government wanted to harness the opportunity of the COVID-19 pandemic to permanently grow the number of people walking and riding in the community.
