National Missing Persons Week 2020 has been opened by ACT Policing launching a local awareness campaign featuring the Territory’s 14 long-term missing persons.
Detective Superintendent Jamey Bellicanta said the community had a role to play in long-term missing persons’ investigations.
“There may be people in our community or around Australia who have information on these missing cases,” Superintendent Bellicanta said.
“Police would like to find answers for the families and friends who don’t know what happened to their loved ones,” he said.
Superintendent Bellicanta said ACT Policing was undertaking a number of activities to raise awareness in the community with the support of local organisations.
“The Plus500 Brumbies have worked with ACT Missing Persons Team to promote National Missing Persons Week with sports fans,” he said.
“Images of the ACT’s missing persons will be displayed on PRIME7, in the Civic Bus Interchange, Canberra Airport, Prime 7, ACT Libraries and the Gungahlin Marketplace.”
He said the family of long-term missing person Laura Haworth made another appeal to the public for any information related to their missing loved one.
“Laura was last seen on Saturday 5 January 2008 in Queanbeyan, she was 23 at the time.”
Superintendent Bellicanta said that on 19 January 2008 Laura’s vehicle was located parked at Kanangra Court car park, but ACT police enquiries in the area were unable to locate her.
He said anyone with information about a missing person could contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or visit the Crime Stoppers website.
“Information can be provided anonymously,” he said.
