The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) has released an action plan outlining the activities it is to do as part of the Electromagnetic Energy (EME) Program.

ARPANSA said the EME Program was an initiative aimed at providing information and assurance to the public as well as continued research into the safety of EME sources such as telecommunications infrastructure.

“With emerging public concern in response to the roll-out of the fifth generation of mobile phone technology (5G), the enhanced program provides a greater focus on dissemination of accurate and reputable information within the community,” ARPANSA said.

“Public education and communication activities under this program will be overseen by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications,” it said.

It said ARPANSA’s role in this program would be to continue scientific research, international engagement and provision of expert scientific advice.

ARPANSA said that under its Plan, ARPANSA EME Program Action Plan 2020-2024, it would assess EME exposure in the community; upgrade its EME laboratory; conduct research on EME and health; engage with international health authorities; and develop national EME safety standards.

It said it would also provide information to the public that translated the scientific content on EME and health for a general audience.
