The Art Gallery of Western Australia’s (AGWA’s) rooftop is to be transformed into a multi-use gallery space and rooftop venue over the next six months.
An external lift and sky-bridge from the Perth Cultural Centre will allow visitors access to the 500-person rooftop venue after hours.
The venue will comprise an open-air rooftop sculpture park featuring works from the State Art Collection and a new internal gallery.
Conservation laboratories which were on the roof have been re-located to the basement.
Minister for Culture and the Arts, David Templeman said the AGWA had also commissioned a 34-metre-long artwork by leading Noongar artist, Christopher Pease, which would wrap around one third of the rooftop wall.
“It is anticipated the project will be completed by January next year,” Mr Templeman said.
He listed other developments planned by the AGWA, including the imminent appointment of an additional Indigenous Associate Curator and the appointment of Western Australian-born New York-based artist, Ian Strange as Guest Artistic Director.
“The AGWA is also extending the tenure of the current Chair of the Board, Janet Holmes à Court, for two years,” the Minister said.
“It is opening a new ground floor gallery dedicated to contemporary Aboriginal art reflecting its status as one of the most important art movements of our time,” he said.
