The National Archives of Australia (NAA) has announced the successful applicants for its 2020 NAA and Australian Historical Association (AHA) Postgraduate Scholarships.
The Archives said the four scholarship recipients would undertake exciting, diverse and challenging research projects drawing on the national archival collection of Australian Government records.
Director-General of the NAA, David Fricker said the Archives would offer each of the scholarship students priority access to records, digitisation services and ongoing assistance from a designated reference officer.
“We are delighted to support these four scholars and their innovative projects,” Mr Fricker said.
“Postgraduate history students are important users of the National Archives and we are so pleased to offer them our expertise and assistance through these scholarships,” he said.
Mr Fricker said PhD scholar from the University of Auckland, Bolin Hu, would use his scholarship to the National Archives’ collection to explore the propaganda efforts of the Nanjing Government in gaining support of the Australian Government and people during the Sino–Japanese War and World War II.
“Focusing on Greek Aegean islander migration to the Anglo-speaking world during the 19th and early 20th centuries, Yianni Cartledge, a PhD scholar from Flinders University, will use archival records to reflect on the major political and economic world events of the period,” Mr Fricker said.
“Julia Russoniello, Doctor of Musical Art scholar from the University of Sydney, will explore classical music performance in Australia in the early 20th century, researching the performance traditions of Australian violinists,” he said, and Kate Kirby, PhD scholar from the University of the Sunshine Coast, would use support from the Archives to research and contribute further to understanding the development of Australian sports policy.
