New virus restrictions to balance borders

The State’s border with Australia’s east coast is going to become harder to cross following the deteriorating COVID-19 situation in Victoria.

Acting Premier, Roger Cook said no one would be allowed into Western Australia if they had been in Victoria in the previous 14 days, unless they met the new exemption list.

“Exemptions will be reduced significantly, meaning only specific essential workers, transport and freight workers and those persons approved by the State Emergency Coordinator, on the advice of the Chief Health Officer, will be permitted to enter the State,” Mr Cook said.

“In addition, everyone who is permitted to enter Western Australia, who has been in Victoria for the previous 14 days, will be served with a notice on arrival compelling them to take a COVID-19 test on day 11 of their time here or at any point when symptoms develop.”

He said that under the State of Emergency, police would continue to perform checks on arrivals and had the power to enforce the COVID-19 test requirement with a fine of $5,000.

“This announcement follows recent moves to reduce the number of international arrivals and tighten entry into the State through exemption classifications,” Mr Cook said.

“What has occurred over east is devastating. We feel deeply for the community and what it’s going through and Western Australia has sent health experts to support Victoria in times like these,” he said.
