Tourism revival just the ticket

The Department of Innovation and Tourism Industry Development has announced that registrations are open for funding ‘shovel-ready’ tourism projects.

Minister for State Development, Tourism and Innovation, Kate Jones said successful recipients would be required to start within three months of approval.

“We know tourism businesses are doing it tough, but we want to make sure that our industry is in the best possible position to reboot once restrictions are lifted,” Ms Jones said.

“By delivering new attractions, we’re not only giving a great boost to our tourism industry, we’re helping to create construction jobs for workers during a tough time.”

Meanwhile, a tourism fund to secure flights to 15 Queensland airports has been announced.

Ms Jones said the initiative followed the Government’s recent partnership with the Whitsundays Regional Council that secured Alliance Airlines flights to fly four times a week between Brisbane and the Whitsunday Coast Airport.

“This funding will allow thousands more Queenslanders to explore their own State and will pump millions of dollars into communities that rely on tourism,” the Minister said.

“This will support 1,500-to-1,600 jobs per year over a three-year period, with each flight tipped to generate up to 50 jobs along the supply chain.”

She said before COVID-19, tourism supported one-in-10 Queensland jobs.

“We need to safeguard as many of these jobs as possible — new flights will help us to achieve that,” Ms Jones said.
