Assistants at home in Home Assist

The Home Assist Secure program has been ramping up operations to cater for the extra support needed during the COVID-19 crisis.

Typical is client Lynette, in her 80s, who has been using Home Assist Secure on and off for years.

With COVID-19 however, she has been using the service on a much more regular basis.

“It’s a good way of finding reliable tradespeople,” Lynette is reported as saying.

“I’ve had locksmiths and plumbers and people to help with odd jobs over time,” she said.

“Then with COVID-19, my doctor told me not to go anywhere as my immunity is compromised.”

As well as the home maintenance, repairs and modifications work that Home Assist Secure already delivered, the service offers deliveries of essential items, regular welfare checks and referrals to community support services during the pandemic.

Lynette heard about the extended service and made a booking for groceries to be delivered once a week.

The Home Assist Secure team delivers her groceries, leaving them in her garage, near her front door so she can easily bring them inside.

“It’s excellent. I’m very grateful for this service,” Lynette said.

Home Assist Secure is a service of the Department of Housing and Public Works for Queenslanders aged 60 years and over, or people of any age with a disability, who can’t undertake or pay for critical home maintenance without assistance.
