Melbourne’s major cultural institutions are to reopen for visitors of all ages and interests in time for the winter school holidays.

An announcement from Creative Victoria included institutions such as the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Melbourne Museum, Scienceworks, IMAX Melbourne and parts of Arts Centre Melbourne, advising that they would officially re-welcome the public on 27 June.

Creative Victoria said that while some cultural venues could reopen under strict conditions earlier, the key public institutions would take further time to ensure their much-loved facilities were ready to welcome the community back safely.

“The directions of the Chief Health Officer will be the principal guide to re-opening conditions,” Creative Victoria said.

“In the weeks leading up to their official re-opening, some of these venues will welcome smaller community groups for special access, viewings and programs,” it said.

“These cultural icons will also continue to offer their popular virtual experiences, such as streamed talks, children’s programs, performances and behind the scenes tours, which have been so embraced by Victorians during the closure period.”

Creative Victoria said that from 22 to 26 June, NGV would host special interest groups, with priority access given to community members who faced additional challenges in experiencing the gallery.

It said that from 22 to 26 June Melbourne Museum would also welcome back museum members as well as children with autism and their families.
