Infrastructure push goes bush

The Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning has identified 48 new Council projects in regional and remote Queensland to be supported by the Building our Regions (BoR) program.

The Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk said the State was partnering with 39 Councils to deliver the projects through Round Five of the BoR.

“This is an investment in the future of Queensland and along with the $200 million boost for Councils under our Works for Queensland program, will play an important part of our COVID-19 recovery,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“These projects will support around 350 construction jobs in townships from the Torres Strait to the border of NSW, which will help local workers and their families.”

She said she wanted to progress the projects quickly to make sure the benefits were felt sooner in the communities and to give industry increased confidence.

Minister for State Development, Tourism and Innovation, Kate Jones said construction was expected to start in the coming weeks.

“No matter where you look throughout our State, we’re partnering with Councils and the private sector to deliver projects that create jobs,” Ms Jones said.

“Whether it’s improving water supply and internet connectivity or expanding tourism opportunities, the positive impacts will be felt for generations — long after construction has been completed.”

She said round Five of BoR focused on construction and planning projects.

Funding applications were submitted by Councils in August 2019 and have gone through a competitive assessment process by the Department.
