Tech roadmap to lead to emission reduction

The Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources has issued a discussion paper on the national Technology Investment Roadmap released to prioritise investments in new and developing technologies.

The newly released Roadmap is one of the key priorities on the road to recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and the release of the discussion paper the next step in the Technology not Taxes approach to reducing emissions.

In a statement, the Department said the Roadmap would prioritise investments in new and developing technologies, deploying the right technology when and where it was needed.

It said it focused on developing technologies that would support jobs growth; backing new industries that would help regional communities and local economies to prosper; while putting Australia at the forefront of research and development.

At the same time, it said, the Roadmap maintains Australia’s track record of reducing global emissions.

Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, Angus Taylor said the Government saw enormous potential in technologies like hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, soil carbon sequestration, biofuels, resources and energy exports to reduce emissions while strengthening the economy.

“At its core, this is about technology not taxes,” Mr Taylor said.

“It means reducing emissions, not reducing jobs and the economy. It is an approach based on rigour, confidence, optimism and Australian ingenuity not ideology”.

He noted the appointment of a Ministerial Reference Panel, led by Australia’s Chief Scientist, Alan Finkel, to support the development of the first Low Emissions Technology Statement that would be published later this year.

Written submissions on the 70-page discussion paper are open until 21 June and the paper can be accessed at this PS News link.
