ACT Domestic Animal Services (DAS) has reported a big increase in families deciding to adopt a dog during the pandemic.

The Service said it had found forever homes for 32 dogs in April.

“Staff have certainly seen an increase in interest in the dogs at the shelter in Symonston, with available dogs for rehoming being adopted quite quickly once available,” DAS said.

“When you adopt a dog from Domestic Animal Services, you’ll have peace of mind knowing your new best friend has passed a temperament test, is in good health and is microchipped,” it said.

“Staff are always available to provide expert advice on your responsibilities involved with owning a dog and can help you choose the right dog for your individual needs.”

DAS said people could view the dogs currently in the shelter on the City Services website.

“It is also recommended to call Domestic Animal Services ahead to check which dogs are available as the situation changes quickly,” it said.

“It is important that when deciding to adopt a dog that you understand the responsibilities of being a new pet owner and how to care for your new family member.”

The Service said pet owners had the responsibility to ensure their dog was happy, healthy and did not negatively impact the community in any way.
