New nature play spaces are to be delivered at popular playgrounds around Canberra to enhance outdoor recreation opportunities for the Territory’s kids.
Minister for City Services, Chris Steel said the new nature play areas would feature elements for climbing, balancing and sand play.
“We know that Canberra children and families have been missing the opportunity to explore Canberra’s over 500 playgrounds, with the spaces being closed during the pandemic,” Mr Steel said.
“Quality play opportunities are really important for children’s development, particularly their physical health and wellbeing,” he said.
“We hope that when children return and restrictions are lifted, children can enjoy new and upgraded play spaces across the ACT.”
He said construction had already begun at Kambah Adventure Playground with work on the new nature play space at Yerrabi Pond District Park to begin within weeks.
“The design at Kambah is based on a shell, with a range of play areas connected by rock and log steppers surrounding a central open area which will feature drums, totem poles and some bright nature-based artwork,” Mr Steel said.
“Logs will be recycled from local infrastructure projects to create a planted tunnel for the kids to enjoy running through.”
He said construction on the new nature play spaces would be completed in July.
