Work has started on infrastructure and maintenance projects throughout Canberra as part of the ACT Government’s economic survival package in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Chief Minister, Andrew Barr said the new fast-tracked projects would provide more jobs for Canberrans, while renewing local infrastructure across the city.
Mr Barr said the new projects included security and bathroom upgrades at the Canberra Theatre Centre; café servery upgrades at the National Arboretum Canberra; a full internal repaint of the National Convention Centre; an office fit out for the ACT Integrity Commission; and an election results display system for the Electoral Commission.
“The fast-track program has focused on ‘screwdriver’ ready works that can start immediately, so that local businesses can keep workers employed now, with works scheduled to be completed by 30 June 2020,” Mr Barr said.
Minister for Community Services and Facilities, Suzanne Orr said disability access improvements would also be undertaken as part of the economic survival package.
Ms Orr said the improvements would include kitchen and accessibility upgrades at the Griffin Community Centre; front door improvements at the Belconnen Community Centre; accessibility and security upgrades for the Weston Community Hub; upgrades to the disability facilities within the Woden Community Centre; and upgrades to the exit door at the Grant Cameron Community Centre.
