ACT Police declared it was “disgusted” by speeding incidents following an enforcement operation over the recent ANZAC Day long weekend which saw more than 230 Canberra drivers issued with infringement notices.
Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Detective Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said he was disgusted and disappointed by these and other recent high range speeding incidents.
“Last week we urged Canberra drivers to do the right thing and stick to the speed limits,” Detective Station Sergeant Boorman said.
“Unfortunately our drivers didn’t heed the message and we have seen more than 230 issued with speeding infringements,” he said.
“Some of the speeds are just staggering, as is the stupidity of the drivers involved in these incidents.”
Detective Station Sergeant Boorman said Traffic Operations officers had targeted speeding drivers on Canberra roads following an alarming number of high range speeding incidents in recent weeks.
“There is simply no excuse for speeding,” he said.
“It’s idiotic, it’s irresponsible and worst of all, it’s dangerous.”
He said people behind the wheel of a vehicle were not just responsible for their own safety and those in the vehicle, but the safety of other road users as well.
“It’s that blatant disregard for the safety of others that make these incidents so infuriating to police.”
Detective Station Sergeant Boorman said Traffic Operations officers would continue their enforcement of road safety rules, focusing on school zones that were back in effect this week.
